The Town of Florence Parks and Recreation Department is excited to offer a class for children that teaches them discipline, control and fitness. Kids learn “Shuri-Ryu Karate”, a mixed martial arts system that consists of not only the traditional punches, blocks, kicks and katas of karate, but also incorporates pressure points, take-downs, throws and self-defense.
The instructor, Joshua Mehr, holds a third degree black belt in karate with over 20 years of experience in various martial arts. Sensei Mehr also holds a master’s degree in Elementary Education and has operated his own Martial Arts Institute in Coolidge, Arizona since 2008.
Classes are held from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm (ages 6 to 10 years) and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm (ages 11 to 17 years) on Thursday evenings at the Florence Library & Community Center, located at 778 N. Main Street.
