Fire Battalion Chief

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Organize, control, direct, and coordinate manpower and technical resources to provide 24hour fire suppression and emergency medical services; assures assigned shift personnel are adequately trained.
  • Responds to emergency incidents during an assigned shift, assumes command and directs fire suppression, hazardous material control and rescue of property conservation activities; requests additional units to the scene when necessary; returning units to service as the situation is controlled.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs Emergency Medical Services, providing emergency medical care and rescue services. Provides continuing education for personnel on medical and safety issues.
  • Supervises, directs, leads, and evaluates staff on assigned shifts. Addresses employee’s concerns and issues. Responsible for directing work, counseling, disciplining, and the completion of assigned performance appraisals. Ensures that department operations conform with local, state, and federal regulations, worker safety, and other applicable laws.
  • Assists Fire Chief in planning, implementing, directing, and managing resources to achieve the strategic goals and objectives of the department and the Town in an efficient and effective manner. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Investigates customer complaints of service delivery.
  • Represents the Fire Department and the Town in public appearances and talks on fire suppression, fire prevention and related subjects.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of departmental goals, policies, and procedures. Interprets policy for personnel on assigned shift.
  • Develops, plans, evaluates, and manages department training programs, ensuring department personnel meet or exceed applicable standards. Responsible for record-keeping and retention of staff training documentation.
  • Enforces fire code by educating the public, investigating fires, inspecting buildings and smoke detectors, conducting fire drills, and attending public meetings to ensure observance of fire safety requirements.
  • Performs all other related duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
High school diploma or GED, plus seven (7) years in Fire Operations with at least five (5) years as a company officer. Associate’s degree in Fire Science Technology preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES
Required:

  • Must have and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
  • Arizona State Hazardous Materials – First Responder Operations Level Certification

Preferred:

  • Arizona State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
  • Arizona State Firefighter I and II Certifications
