
Librarian- Youth Programming

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, provides customer service to community library patrons by providing reference services and answering miscellaneous reference requests. Plans, organizes, coordinates, implements, promotes, and supervises various library programs and events. Supervises and trains library personnel and assists with the general operation of the library.
SUPERVISION:
This position has supervisory responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

▪ Provides general library services by assisting customers in locating materials, explaining library policies and procedures, answering questions on audio visual equipment, assisting with computer use, operating, and troubleshooting equipment, responding to complaints, and monitoring computer use.
▪ Develops the collection by researching and evaluating materials, books, supplies, and equipment, evaluating the current collection, monitoring acquisitions, ordering materials, maintaining selections, and cataloging purchases.
▪ Works on the reference desk answering questions, responding to general inquiries, placing items on hold, interfacing with other libraries for materials, assisting with or providing computer training, updating websites, and researching information.
▪ Assists patrons with library needs by locating materials not currently in the collection but available elsewhere, developing and delivering programs geared to specific audiences, locating materials currently on the shelves, and providing reference services for specific needs.
▪ Listens, communicates, and interacts positively with co-workers to enhance effectiveness of work unit and internal customer and to promote productivity of work team.
▪ Research and compile the researched information on request; develops annotated bibliographies, indices, and study guides.
▪ Evaluates donated and damaged materials for disposition.
▪ Participates in the development or revision of library policies and procedures. Enforces library policies, procedures, and regulations with patrons.
▪ Conducts library tours, makes presentations to school and community groups both on and off site.
▪ Participates in the training and supervision of staff and volunteers.
▪ Represents the library and functions as supervising Librarian in the absence of the Library Director.
▪ Performs all other related duties, as assigned.
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor’s degree in library science or related field, plus two (2) years professional experience in a public library with one (1) year experience in a lead or supervisory capacity; OR an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

Required:
❑ Must have and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Other:
❑ Must maintain current awareness of professional library issues and developments.
Skills and Abilities:
❑ Ability to communicate with, and respond pleasantly to, a demanding and diverse public. Must be able to work well with children, teens, and adult patrons.
❑ Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
❑ Ability to plan, organize, schedule, train, and effectively supervise departmental personnel and volunteers.
❑ Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend basic written direction.
❑ Ability to write general correspondence, memorandums, and reports.
❑ Ability to perform simple math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as the ability to calculate decimals and percentages. Ability to utilize principles of fractions and interpret graphs.
❑ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

❑ Automated library system (Polaris experience preferred)

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit for long periods of time, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to occasionally carry, push/pull objects and materials up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, and manual
dexterity in combination with eye/hand coordination. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.

Standard office equipment such as personal computer, telephone, copy machine, 10-key calculator, fax machine that require continuous and repetitive arm or hand and eye movement.
The employee must have sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to permit discern verbal instructions, use of telephone, and communications with others.
Position requirements are primarily carried out in an office environment or meeting forum. The noise level is usually moderate.
