
Public Safety Dispatcher

JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, identifies and dispatches appropriate law enforcement, fire, and emergency service units, gathers and relays critical information; complies with Police and Fire Department policies and procedures to assure the safety and the public.
SUPERVISION:
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; projecting a positive image and support of the Town’s organizations.
- Interviews callers and gathers details; prioritizes calls for service and determines appropriate personnel to respond. Dispatches calls for service; relays pertinent information to law enforcement and fire department officers in a concise manner; providing information and assistance to the public within scope of authority.
- Provides detailed call information to official personnel as needed. Maintains status and awareness of Police patrol unit and fire department apparatus locations. Monitors message traffic and relays information to police and fire officers.
- Enters emergency assistance calls into computer aided dispatch incident logs. Input information into the ACJIS & NCIC computer system. Maintains records and files.
- Contacts other law enforcement and fire agencies for additional information and resources as needed, relaying pertinent information regarding incidents.
- Notifies key Town personnel on critical incidents. Follows all Department policies and procedures to assure police and fire officer safety.
- Enters and verifies warrant information. Confirms warrants for other agencies.
- Performs inquiries and criminal history checks for officers through ACJIS & NCIC. Sends inquiries to other agencies for warrant confirmations or general information.
- Enters data for records and reports. Processes forms, record files, query system databases.
- Provides dispatch information, direction, and guidance for “Working Fire Response” team members. Able to accurately and clearly communicate and coordinate fire suppression efforts by dispatching appropriate fire apparatus while ensuring adequate coverage to Town response areas.
- Understands and engages Mutual Aid procedures, fire, and medical unit response requirements, providing efficient /accurate communications and guidance to emergency personnel.
- Performs all other related duties, as assigned.
Education and Experience Required:
High school diploma or GED plus two (2) years general office/clerical/computer experience involving substantial public contact.
Required:
- Must have and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
- Certificate to operate the AZ Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIC) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system; or be able to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
Other
- Ability to pass a background investigation by NCIC.
- Ability to obtain Basic Communications Dispatch Certificate.
- Typing speed 40 words per minute.
- Ability to work schedule required to fulfill duties of position.

- Strong ability to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, providing pertinent facts.
- Ability to follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, relaying details accurately.
- Ability to learn and retain Police and Fire Departments’ standard dispatch policies and procedures.
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as work effectively with teams of co-workers.
- Skill in working under pressure of deadlines, and establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with employees, officials, other agencies, and the public.
- Requires a voice that is clear and easily understood over both the phone and a radio.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communications and discern emergency/alarm systems. The employee is regularly required to sit and speak through a telephone or radio device for long periods of time, with attention to detail. Employee must possess manual dexterity to handle or feel objects/controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to occasionally carry, push/pull objects and materials up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, ability to adjust focus, and manual dexterity in combination with eye/hand coordination.
Office noise level is usually moderate.
