It is the time of the year when we reflect on the happening of 2010 and look forward to a prosperous 2011. A lot of great things happened in Florence in the last 12 months. The accomplishments for the Town of Florence and our community partners in 2010 include the opening Florence Community Healthcare Hospital on Adamsville Road, commencement of construction of the Florence Hospital at Anthem, re-opening of the McFarland State Park, first ever all-mail ballot in Pinal County, voter approval of the 2020 General Plan, voter approval of Home Rule, strategic annexations, acceptance of a statewide award for the Town’s updated Historic District Guidelines, street improvements, new National Guard facilities, kick off of the North End Framework Study, start of construction of a solar farm, implementation of a Downtown Commercial Rehab Program to assist downtown businesses, new mural in the downtown, and the organization of many successful special events including the 4th of July, Halloween, Fishing Derby, Junior Parada parade, and the Holiday Light Parade. We have a lot of goals for 2011. Some of which include the much needed upgrade of the police and fire communication system, construction of a new evidence storage facility to support police operations, and the continued fiscally responsible approach to make ends meet in at a time when Town revenues are on the decline due to a diminished economy. We understand that the Florence Copper Project on Hunt Highway is applying for the required State and Federal permits. This process includes EPA involvement. The adoption of the Medical Marijuana proposition presents challenges as we update our ordinances to reflect the changes to this new State law. We appreciate this time of the year to reflect, relax and enjoy some good times with family and friends. On behalf of the Florence Town Council and staff, I wish all of our citizens and friends happy holidays and a prosperous new year! Vicki Kilvinger Mayor of Florence
