Florence, AZ – The Town of Florence is excited to announce the appointment of Mitch Snyder as the new Fire Chief of the Florence Fire Department, effective September 5, 2023. Mr. Snyder brings nearly forty years of professional fire service experience, making him a valuable addition to our organization and community.
Most recently, Mr. Snyder served as Fire Chief of the Gresham Fire and Emergency Services Department in Oregon State. He has an extensive background in fire department operations and a proven track record of promoting innovation and excellence. With a career that began as a volunteer firefighter, he has risen through the ranks to the position of Fire Chief, demonstrating a deep commitment to the fire service and a passion for community safety.
Throughout his career, Mr. Snyder has shown exceptional leadership skills, demonstrated by his involvement in building and leading strong teams, as well as his contributions to regional, state, and national fire service organizations such as Oregon’s Fire Chiefs Association. He has also established himself as a skilled public speaker through his collaboration with the International Association of Fire Chiefs, delivering nationwide presentations aimed at enhancing fire department operations and efficiencies.
Under his leadership, Mr. Snyder has developed innovative programs like the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program, FDCARES, which aligns fire and medical services with community needs, enhancing the department’s effectiveness and value to the community. Additionally, his experience in fostering partnerships with public organizations and private entities has resulted in substantial benefits for the organizations and regions he has served.

With Mr. Snyder’s appointment, Interim Fire Chief, James Walter, will resume his role as Battalion Chief. We thank Mr. Walter for his outstanding service to the Florence Fire Department and look forward to his continued leadership within the organization and community.
