Florence, AZ – The Town of Florence is proud to help keep the wheels turning for Florence High School’s Driver’s Education program. Thanks to the donation of a retired Town vehicle, no longer needed for daily operations and fully serviced for its new role, students will continue to have access to this valuable elective course – an increasingly rare opportunity in Arizona high schools.

When the Town learned the school’s Driver’s Ed vehicle had reached the end of its useful life, staff identified a Ford Crown Victoria previously used for investigations, volunteer programs, and training. After a full safety inspection and updates, including new tires, brakes, and an oil change, it was ready for the classroom and the road. The vehicle was delivered to Florence High School on August 14, 2025.

Driver’s Ed has long been part of the Florence High School curriculum. Mr. Jerry Link, who has taught the class for more than 52 years and joined FUSD in 2007, shared:

“There are not many school districts in the state of Arizona that offer this class. I am grateful that Florence Unified has a superintendent that realizes the importance of offering Driver’s Ed to our students. Educated drivers are safe drivers.”

Florence Town Manager Bruce Walls stated:

“This is a great example of how local partnerships can make a lasting difference for our youth. Supporting education is one of the best investments a town can make – and we’re proud to play a small part in helping students gain the tools and confidence they need behind the wheel.”

FUSD Superintendent Chris Knutsen added:

“When I learned the Florence High School Driver’s Education vehicle was in need of significant repair, I immediately began exploring options for either repairing or replacing it. Unfortunately, the cost exceeded what the district could afford at the time.

I also learned that if families were to enroll their students in private driver’s education courses, it could cost anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000 per student. I wanted to avoid placing that financial burden on families and to preserve the opportunity for students, so I started looking for alternative solutions.

Thanks to the Town of Florence and our partnership with FUSD, we are able to continue the Driver’s Education program for our youth while demonstrating how collaboration produces meaningful results that benefit our entire community.

FUSD is deeply grateful to the Town of Florence for helping keep this vital program accessible for students and affordable for families.”

The Town of Florence and FUSD remain committed to supporting local youth and ensuring students have access to educational programs that prepare them for real-world success – both in the classroom and on the road.
