Water Conservation

Water Stewardship Art Contest

Water is not just a resource; it is a lifeline for our desert ecosystem, and we must learn how to manage our water wisely. This year’s theme, Save Water, Save the Desert, emphasizes how conserving water can help protect the delicate balance of life in our deserts, ensuring they continue to thrive for future generations. We encourage all students to get creative with the theme to reflect the importance of saving water for the desert ecosystem whether it’s desert plants, wildlife, or the land itself. Let your imagination run wild as you illustrate how water is crucial to maintaining the beauty and vitality of our desert home.

The Water Stewardship Art Contest is open to all K-12 students residing within the Town of Florence or attending school in the Florence Unified School District. Our goal is to offer a creative platform for students to explore the importance of water conservation while raising awareness about the unique challenges our desert communities face in preserving this vital resource. All contest entries will be showcased in the Viney Jones Community Center and Library lobby throughout April in celebration of Water Awareness Month.

Florence Water Festival

The Florence Water Festival is hosted annually by the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. This event provides a hands-on learning experience for 4th-grade students in the Florence Unified School District about the water cycle, watersheds, water technology, and groundwater. The 2023 Florence Water Festival reached 26 teachers from 8 schools and 595 students.

Water Awareness Month

April is Water Awareness Month in Arizona. Water Awareness Month is an opportunity for water providers to share information about water resources and conservation with their customers. In 2023, the Town of Florence hosted an open house for Florence water users to help educate our customers about water conservation.

Drought Preparedness

Despite the drought of the Colorado River, the Town of Florence has ample water supply to provide to customers. However, in case of an emergency, the Town of Florence has adopted a drought management response procedure. This procedure provides a set of guidelines to manage the Town’s water supply in situations of water scarcity. These guidelines identify four different drought response stages while each stage comprises escalating conservation measures. These four stages include “Water Alert,” “Water Warning,” “Water Emergency,” and “Water Crisis.”

Details regarding Florence’s drought response procedures can be found within the Town of Florence municipal code.
