Gather your family and friends to register for the Florence Parks and Recreation Department’s Hiking Club.  The final hike this season is Saturday, March 14, 2015.

The trail begins at the Sunset Vista Trailhead at the north end of the Picacho Peak State Park, located between Casa Grande and Tucson. It is a 6.2 mile, round-trip hike to the summit of the peak. This is a challenging hike. The path starts out flat, slowly gaining elevation for the first mile and a half, then switch backs steeply up the mountain’s southern face. Next the mountain morphs to a nearly vertical rock face, lined by many segments of steel cables and handrails. A final set of switchbacks leads to the summit. It is recommended to bring sturdy gloves as the cables can be hard on your hands.

Participants meet at the Florence Fitness Center (133 N. Main Street) at 8:45 am. Departure time is 9:00 a.m. sharp.  Participants drive themselves to the trailhead. The hike and drive-time for this event is approximately six to seven hours.

The fee is $5.00 for this event and there is a 15 person group limit. There is an additional $7.00 per vehicle entry fee to the park. Hikers under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.  The registration deadline is Thursday, March 12, 2015.

Register at the Parks and Recreation Department at 132 N. Bailey Street, the Town of Florence Fitness Center at 133 N. Main Street, or at www.florenceaz.gov/parks.
