Doug Hamilton, who did a museum presentation a few years back on the Apache Kid, returns to the museum to do a program on a story of Army and Apache conflict. Based on an article he and two other writers published in Wild West Magazine, this story tells the tale of small and vulnerable Army mule supply wagon traveling from Yuma to Fort Grant in 1866.
Passing by Florence, the wagon headed into the isolated area southeast of town and into the history books. What were they doing traveling in such an unprotected manner in hostile Apache territory? Did anyone survive the encounter? Find out as Dough Hamilton spins the tale of good luck and bad luck in early Arizona history.
Hamilton, after retiring from a career in electrical engineering, has devoted much time researching the history of the Southwest. He is the co-author several textbooks, of Photographing Mesa Verde, and the monograph this lecture is based upon. He is currently working on a series It Happened Here, video documentaries and history slide shows filmed at locations of historic events. His video of the Escape of the Apache Kid will be shown on the Pinal County cable channel.
The program date is Sunday March 10th at 2:00 p.m. and will be the last in our museum speaker’s series until next Fall.
