Az Humanities and Florence Community Services have partnered again to present a series of local historic lectures from the Az Speaks program. The first presentation is on Tuesday, November 19th at 6:00 p.m. in the Library and Community Center titled, Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of WWII. During the war, 1,000 women served as Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), freeing male pilots for combat roles at a critical time. The WASP ferried planes from factories to destination points, performed engineer test flying of repaired aircraft and target towing for gunnery training. By the spring of 1944, every P-51 Mustang flown in combat had already been flown by a WASP. This presentation shares their stories as fliers, patriots, and women who had to fight for the right to be called veterans. Natalie J. Stewart-Smith is the presenter at this free event. She’s been an educator for over 25 years and is a former Army officer and historian. The Community Center is located at 778 N. Main Street. For more information, call (520) 868-7040.
