Volunteers are needed to help with a new and unique program presented by the Florence Community Services Department.  The program is called POWWOW (Produce on Wheels – With Out Waste) which is a type of farmer’s market and administered by Borderlands Produce Rescue.  This is a non-profit organization, based in Nogales whose purpose is to “rescue excess produce and distribute to the public at affordable prices.”  Shoppers at the POWWOW may purchase up to 70 pounds of produce for only $12.00.

Anyone interested in helping, should attend a Volunteer Information and Training meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 18th at the Library and Community Center at 778 N. Main Street.  Large blocks of time are not required.  Volunteers will be scheduled in two-hour shifts each month (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.).

Some examples of volunteer duties are set-up, handling of registration and money, handing out and monitoring the produce and clean-up.

Florence POWWOW is scheduled for the fourth Saturday of each month, beginning in November through May.  Our first POWWOW distribution date is Saturday, November 23rd in the Community Center/Aquatic Center parking lot.
