The Florence Main Street Program will present the 5th Annual Florence Multicultural Festival on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. in historic downtown Florence. The award winning festival celebrates the diverse cultures found in Arizona through music, dance and cultural exhibitions. Activities include multicultural music performances, food and merchandise vendors, crafts for the kids, a salsa making contest, and a classic car cruise-in. The Children’s Global Celebration, a performance by Florence K-8 students, features presentations and music that highlight several cultures. The main attraction at the festival will be the entertainment, with performances that range from Irish step dancing to Bluegrass music.
The Phoenix Irish Step Dancers promote Irish dancing as a living form of dance based on the traditions that have evolved in Irish dancing for hundreds of years. The teachers and dancers have all received many years of formal training through their association with competitive Irish dance schools.
Fushicho Daiko Dojo Taiko Drummers perform the ancient art of drumming, Japanese style. Members of the group spend time in Japan each year studying their art form. Phoenix Taiko Drummers have performed at Matsuri, a Festival of Japan; the Asian Festival; and in Matsuyama, Japan.
Copper River Band has played at Bluegrass festivals all over Arizona and the West. In 2008, the band was invited to perform at the International Bluegrass Music Association in Nashville, TN. The four band members each sing all parts which provide a variety of music that all audiences will enjoy.
Interpolacion is a local duo consisting of Ed Curran playing alto saxophone and Hermalene Gross on guitar. The two distinct styles of jazz and classical guitar when played together form an interpolation of sound that join into one expression.
The festival is made possible through the generous support of the Town of Florence, National Bank of Arizona, Florence Copper Project and the Arizona Commission on the Arts with funding from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Arizona Commission on the Arts, the state arts agency, works to link artists and arts organizations to communities.
