Did you know that Florence High School’s baseball field is named after long-time resident and athlete Joe S. Padilla? Or that Coolidge named its high school stadium after coach and athletic director Larry Delbridge?

Join author Scott Hanson at the Florence Community Library on Friday, June 10, at 5:30 pm. Hanson will share stories that he heard while researching his book, Who Is Gym?: The Stories Behind Arizona’s High School Sports Venues.

An Arizona native and former high school coach, Hanson became curious about the names of the many stadiums and gymnasiums that his teams played in over the years. He interviewed school administrators, alumni, librarians, and local historians throughout the state to uncover how and why different gymnasiums were given their names and compiled all the stories into a record of little-known Arizona history.

This project is supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For more information, or to sign up, please contact the library at (520) 868 – 8311.
