Each year, the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) coordinates the Ultimate Lifeguard Challenge, a mini-Olympics type of competition for lifeguards.

Teams of aquatic personnel representing state-wide towns and municipalities come together and compete in these events. Some of those events include, Passive Victim Rescue, Distressed Swimmer Rescue and Submerged Object Rescue.

This year’s event saw 15 teams competing on Sunday, June 25 at the Kiwanis Recreation Center in Tempe. Florence Aquatic Center Lifeguards participated for the third year and had two notable placings. Pool Manager Payton Cap finished third overall in the Women’s 100-Yard Submerged Object event and Head Guard Nathan Lamas finished sixth overall in the Men’s 100-Yard Distressed Swimmer competition.

This annual event unites lifeguards from around the state for networking as well as friendly competition.
