The Florence Community Library would like to thank the Friends of the Library for sponsoring mystery writer Betty Webb’s visit on Saturday, June 11. Webb used a strong sense of humor to keep readers engaged, actively encouraging questions throughout her talk as she discussed her popular Lena Jones and Gunn Zoo mystery series.

The discussion included several pieces of advice for those wanting to write their own stories and novels. One insight was the way in which a story, its characters, and its tone need to work together for a story to be successful. “The story and the tone need to match,” Webb said, adding that “a dark story should be written with a dark tone”. She also talked about the need for discipline in writing, saying that an author needs to be prepared to write for several hours per day.

The audience responded well. One patron commented about how much she enjoyed the chance to meet authors in person. Another was impressed by how approachable Webb was. Webb’s books were also available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Friends of the Library to help to sponsor future events.
